Handcrafting Techniques Used To Create Artisanal Carpets

At The Merge Projekt, each carpet has its own unique story. Whether being woven with true craftsmanship, or being hand stitched with love; each one of our designer carpets is a masterpiece in itself!

How do we tell these beautiful stories, you might think? The answer is easy! Our skilled artisans put in all their creative magic into the detailing of every carpet design. Each designing technique that we use, reflects a rich history and centuries-old traditions.

From modern trendy rugs to classic beauties- all our handcrafted carpets are created with grandiose! And we have four very distinct ways to weave these enchanting carpet designs –

  1. Hand-looming
Using a vertical loom with a mountain warp, each element is woven into the carpet, one thread at a time. While the loom holds the warp, the threads interweave and create felted textures and contemporary patterns by pressing different types of fibers together in an artistic, yet traditional process. Handlooms are a great way to create a vintage interior design! This process creates beautiful border textures, bold motifs and striking contrasts between the threads.Want to explore the world of hand loomed carpets further? 1. Hand-tufting
While hand-looming is a very traditional way of designing carpets, hand-tufting on the other hand is a faster, more modern innovation for artisanal carpets. In this process, our artisans punch strands of wool or viscose onto a canvas, which has a design graph stitched on a frame. This is done with the help of hand operated tools such as a tufting gun. Then, the edges are bound together to create the final masterpiece!
Hand Tufted carpets are best used for trendy and modern carpet designs that need rapid styling and an innovative touch to the rug.

  1. Hand-knotting
This by far, is our favourite handcrafting technique! One of the oldest, most elaborate techniques and one that reflects a rich history of craftsmanship, hand-knotting incorporates traditional weaving that helps bring out the soul of the carpet through detailed artistry. These rugs are woven completely by hand and display intricate designs that are carved out to create a higher definition. The weaver inserts knots in the rug, and ties each of these knots with their hand. Each knot is woven and detailed one by one, around a vertical warp thread and a metal rod, making this process one that requires immense time and effort.

The higher the knots, the better the quality! Looking for the finest hand knotted carpet? Click here to see our preferred carpet.

  1. Handweaving or flat weaving
Are decorative rugs something that you are very fond of? Then handwoven carpets are what you need to invest in for your space!

In this technique, the rugs are woven by interlacing the warp and weft threads, without the use of knots. Flat-woven carpets are light, easy to use and convenient. Its simple body and double-sided design makes it durable and long-lasting.

If you like to keep changing the look of your room interiors and throwing in trendy pieces that make your space upbeat and out-of-the-box; Flat woven carpets should be your go-to!
